What does the Islamic religion have to do with celebrating Valentine's Day?
Every year on February 14,
Valentine's Day is celebrated in parts of the world.
This celebration, which is based on a religious holiday that Christians celebrate with Saint Valentine, has been a tradition for a long time attached to the history of European societies until it changed its face from the old religion and evolved into social issues.
It is especially related to
matters of love and affection. There are many young Somalis who celebrate their
love on this day, seeing married couples or those who love each other in the
cities giving each other red flowers to show their love to each other.
so, what does Islam have to do
with Muslims celebrating a day marked by other religions?
That question has been
scientifically answered by many scholars including Somali scholars. Sheikh
Mustafa Haji Ismail is one of the most respected scholars when it comes to
Islamic awakening.
Sheikh Mustafa, while answering
this question, said that the Muslim person is required to check where he is
taking his step, and be careful not to follow practices that have been copied
from other places.
The sheikh, referring to religious issues, urged the Somali youth not to be influenced by foreign cultures that do not have full knowledge and understanding of their origins and are not useful. On the other hand, he urged the youth that if they are imitating other cultures, they should imitate the science and technology that has been developed, while they are busy with fake things and giving flowers.
Likewise, Sheikh Mohamed Abdi Umal, one of the great scholars of Somalia, described the celebration of Valentine and similar practices that are increasing in the country as "an attack to capture the minds of the youth."
The sheikh, who was talking about
the motives behind the spread of foreign culture among the public, added that
in order to control the minds of the youth, regardless of their ethnicity or
culture, they are beautified, so that in the end the mind can be captured and
become a tool from afar. guide.
Sheikh Umal, who was talking
about setting aside a special day for love, asked himself where the world
deliberated and decided to set a special day for the celebration of love. He
described the so-called international days as a mysterious kidnapping aimed at
misleading the youth, to divert them from the straight path.
Finally, Sheikh Mohamed Abdi Umal
described the so-called celebration of Valentine's Day or World Love Day as not
permissible in Islam, and he warned the Somali people, especially the youth, to
beware of the hidden traps of false names and honors given to them. i.e., to
sweeten worship and bad practices.
The celebration of Valentine's
Day, although it originated in Western countries, continues to spread that
tradition in many countries that have no relationship with the Islamic world,
such as the Muslim world; which is attributed to media and social media tools
that have made the world a village that is aware of itself.
Every year on the 14th of
February, it is customary to celebrate the International Valentine's Day, and
as a result, many young people around the world prepare to celebrate with
others. and religious priests who see a threat to their culture, tradition and
religion.
Some countries have taken steps
to limit the opportunities for their youth to adapt to other cultures, for
example in Somalia and some Somali lands, the elderly and scholars have started
to raise awareness, while others have banned the celebration of Valentine's Day
in their countries.
For example, Indonesia, which is
the country where the majority of Muslims live, has completely banned the
celebration of Valentine's Day, and Muslim couples have been ordered to refrain
from this practice and not go beyond their religion, as they said. .
